Hydraulic oil gets too hot

Hot oil loses its lubricating power and wears pumps and seals faster.

Safety first: Switch off the pump, release all pressure (open the on/off valve or bleed-down valve) and lock out before you open any high-pressure part. Never put a hand or tool near a running jet.
1Quick questionsYour answers put the most likely cause on top.
Is your pump oil-to-water or oil-to-air cooled?
2Check the causes, most likely first 0 of 4 checked
01Cooling water flow too low Most likely

A blocked heat exchanger or closed cooling valve cannot remove heat.

How to check: Check cooling water flow and temperature; flush the exchanger.

02Relief valve partly open Possible

Oil passing the relief valve turns power into heat.

How to check: A relief valve much hotter than the lines leaks.

03Dirty oil filter Possible

A clogged filter makes the pump work harder.

How to check: Check the filter indicator; replace the element.

04Pump idling under pressure Less likely

Holding full pressure while not cutting adds heat.

How to check: Use low pressure or stop when idle.
